<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;ve been following the whole Meta Muse Image rollout this week, and honestly, the way it played out says a lot about how not to ship AI features.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here&#8217;s what happened: Meta launched Muse Image, an AI image generator from their Superintelligence Labs team. One of the features let users @-mention any public Instagram account and have the AI use that account&#8217;s photos as a reference for generating new images. No notification. No consent step. If your Instagram was public, your photos could be pulled into someone else&#8217;s AI generation and you&#8217;d never know.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I get the idea behind it, creative remixing, referencing styles, whatever the pitch was internally. But the moment I read this, my first thought was: how did this get past a product review? &#8220;Public&#8221; was being treated as &#8220;usable however we want,&#8221; and that&#8217;s just not how people think about their own content, even when it&#8217;s public.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The backlash came fast. People started sharing workarounds to opt out. Talent agencies like <a href="https://www.caa.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CAA</a> reportedly got involved because obviously actors, models, public figures, anyone with a public presence had zero control over how their likeness was being used. By Friday, Meta pulled the feature entirely, admitting it &#8220;missed the mark.&#8221;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why I think this matters beyond the news cycle</strong>?</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This isn&#8217;t really a one-off mistake. It&#8217;s a pattern I keep noticing with AI features across platforms: ship first, add guardrails after backlash. Consent is treated as a PR problem to solve later instead of a design requirement from day one.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As someone building products, this is the kind of thing I try to keep in mind even at a small scale. If a feature touches someone else&#8217;s data or identity even public data, the default should protect the person, not the feature&#8217;s growth metrics. Opt-in should mean opt-in, not &#8220;you didn&#8217;t disable it so we assumed yes.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s a good reminder for anyone building with AI right now, especially with how easy it&#8217;s become to plug in generative models. Just because you <em>can</em> reference someone&#8217;s public data to generate something new doesn&#8217;t mean you should skip asking whether they&#8217;re okay with it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Conclusion</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meta will probably ship something similar again with better guardrails. But I think the real lesson here isn&#8217;t about Meta specifically, it&#8217;s about the mindset devs and product teams need to have before shipping anything that touches other people&#8217;s identity or content.</p>
